SandStorm Weimaraner Puppies

Weimaraner: (Pronounced "Vy-mar-ah-ner") or simply called "Weims". This breed of dog was originally bred to hunt big game like so many of our sporting breeds were originally bred to do. They (along with the GWP and others) were used for fur and feather and with their outstanding scenting ability can also follow the invisible scent of a human being who has walked through a particular area.....much more difficult even than following a week old blood track from a deer.

The Weimaraner standard specifically calls for coat colors ranging from silver, grey and pewter. While many blue Weimaraners are being produced, they are not part of the AKC standard and cannot be shown in the breed competitions. Longhairs are the same situation, not a part of our standard, although both of these animals can be found in the USA, along with the "champagne" colors which also are not part of the breed standard. Breeders have worked for decades to specifically breed the best attributes of the Weimaraner in an effort to produce even better dogs that are healthier, better tempered and better suited for the suburban life of most people today while breeding out the undesirable traits.

The breed has a short hair coat which is easily kept clean - basically a good brushing a couple of times a week, along with a weekly nail trim will keep them looking great. They are full of stamina and drive, clowning personalities and exceptionally intelligent. They are not the dog for everybody as they need lots of exercise, training and attention. However, their intelligence and desire to work makes them very trainable, they are sweet, soulful dogs that do much better in the house with their people, not in a kennel situation.

Weimaraners are a truly versatile breed - you can find them as hunting and hunting competition partners, obedience dogs, show dogs, SAR and tracking dogs, NAVHDA, agility....there are Weimaraners used by the border patrol. Their highly tuned sense of smell and desire to work makes them great in drug, accelerant, vegetable, disease and any scent discrimination application. Most of all they are loving family members and I am often questioned on why my Weims don't ever stop wagging their tails. I guess they are happy! I find this breed also has a great sense of humor (at least the lines of my dogs), they get along well with people and other dogs, horses, sheep - you name it. Given the opportunity a Weimaraner will run and play all day. A favorite game of one of my Weims is to put her kong thru any gate on our property and then find one of us to get it for her. Obviously a great manipulator of human behavior...

This breed is staunch and steady on birds, has the stamina to go all day in the field and is usually ready for anything. Fun to train, but another breed that must be positively reinforced and does better with shorter training sessions. They do learn very quickly and like the GWP will look for their own entertainment if bored. Boredom comes easily to an intelligent dog and we recommend crate or den training for ALL dogs regardless of breed. If you cannot watch what they are doing it is better they are in their own space, safe from chewing an electrical cord or getting into something that could hurt them. They do need time and attention though and if you are considering a Weimaraner please consider your availability to spend time exercising, training and playing with your Weimaraner. Chances are you will have more fun than you have ever had 'pre-Weim'.

I have been extremely fortunate with my very small breeding program in that I've produced, happy, healthy, versatile Weimaraners that have excelled in the show ring and performance events and just as importantly, have gone to wonderful families who love, train and enjoy their Weimaraners as companions and competition animals. I keep track of every pup and enjoy hearing about them and getting those wonderful picture Christmas cards every year!

One reason I have purposely kept the program small is that while it is my intent to produce quality animals that are capable of doing just about any activity you want while looking beautiful doing it, I am not on a mission to fill the world with "my dogs". I do follow the Weimaraner Club of America Breeder Ethics (and then some) and only produce a litter when I want a Weimaraner for myself. Puppies are great fun but they also require a great deal of responsibility, attention, sleep deprivation (me not them), proper socialization, intro to gamebirds, other animals, people and veterinary care even before they are born to ensure they have the right foundation whether they stay with me or go to a new, carefully selected home.

The Weimaraner is a classic pointing breed, often referred to as the grey ghost - they are beautiful, almost ethereal... a joy to own and a thrill to hunt over.

Your new best friend should be a happy, healthy animal that will provide you
with many years of companionship, enjoyment and pride regardless of the breed.
