Recent Accomplishments at SandStorm Kennels

Lady - New Bench Champion & Champion Tracker!
Lady earned the last major to complete the AKC Conformation Champion title on Saturday, July 22, 2008 making her the Weimaraner breed's very first AKC Bench Champion and AKC Champion Tracker!
She is now Ch. CT SandStorm's A Lady Of The Lake. See her page for more information on this difficult achievement.

Ari wins Best Of Opposite from Veteran's at Wisc Weim Specialty!
Ari won Best Veteran at the Wisconsin Weimaraner Specialty on July 25, 2008 and followed that win up with BOS over specials. The old girl's still got it.....

Stogie wins Best Veteran at GWP of WI Specialty!
Stogie won Best Veteran at the German Wirehaired Pointer Club of Wisconsin Specialty on July 26, 2008 and got nice compliments from the judge who stated she would have preferred to see the quality he possesses in the younger GWPs she judged that day. For an older gentleman he is still very solid and sound, exhibiting beautiful floaty movement with nice extension, level topline with a correct coat and nice dark pigment for solid liver dog. Pix soon!

Biz - Reserve to a major at first shows!
On July 27, 2008 Biz was awarded Reserve Winner's Dog to a major at his very first shows. What a good boy and such a pretty puppy.

Juni - New Champion!
On May 30, 2008 Juni won a 3 pt major making her Ch. De La Mahafus Endless Love.

Lis - Another Major Win!
On May 31, 2008 Lis got her first major! She is about halfway to being an AKC bench champion and with that attitude it probably won't take too long.
On June 22, 2008 Lis got her 2nd major! She needs 3 singles to finish.

Crystal still out there winning!
Crystal has been successfully garnering BOB or BOS just about every time out. She gets lots of compliments from show attendees and judges alike. She sure went from being show girl to mother of four back to show girl with ease!

SandStorm Snow Doubt “Sparkle” won Best Crested Puppy at the Badgerland Kennel Club Sanctioned Match a couple of weeks ago at the tender age of just 6 months, but to our great delight went onto win the Toy Group and then won BEST PUPPY IN MATCH!!! Wow – what an honor.
Update ... She did it again! Best Crested at another sanctioned match where there were even more cresteds this time. Sparkle went onto a Group 3 in the toy group against some very nice competition that evening also. Pix soon.
More good news: Sparkle went RWB under Mrs. Lois Wolff White at the Kishwaukee Kennel Club Show on July 13, 2008 and her mother (Crystal) won Best of Breed that day too!!

Hello and welcome to SandStorm Kennels!

The name comes from my name Sandra and an old dog Stormy. I grew up playing with dogs and horses, was active in 4-H, then started teaching obedience classes with my father H. Ted Hoesel (United State’s first AKC Variable Surface Tracking Judge) which I did for many years. Some of my fondest memories are traipsing after my father in the field doing bird work with the dogs or being a decoy for the Illini Search & Rescue group he started. When my parents told us kids to "get lost" they really meant it!

We also were privileged to go to many dog shows, field trials and sled dog events. The dogs (Soot, Shatzie and Shana) were really just other siblings that had to endure "dress up" and "veterinarian" at the hands of us kids... After I had my own household and dogs I continued with obedience and also went back to doing dog shows and field events. Somehow I also managed to raise an exceptional human being, my son Jim. He now lives in San Diego with his wife Janelle and their dogs Riley and Alfred.

For the last ten + years, I have been an AKC field trial and hunt test judge (# ZE121) for pointing breeds. I also compete with my dogs and client dogs in the show ring, as well as train and handle in hunt tests, field trials and tracking tests. I appreciate the olfactory sense canines are equipped with, so training bird dogs and search/tracking dogs continues to be a paramount interest. There are only 52 weekends a year I really don’t have time for anything else.

I also serve as a 4-H judge and enjoy giving back in this way.
Additionally I have spent many years in various breed, all-breed or national club officer or chair positions.
Currently I'm a member of the German Wirehaired Pointer Club of America, The Weimaraner Club of America and The Weimaraner Club Of Northern Illinois.
At this time I am close to completing requirements to apply to judge several sporting breeds at AKC dog shows.

There are many breeds that intrigue me and I just plain love dogs. The first Chinese Crested came at a time when I was recovering from cancer and cancer treatment. Crystal certainly brought the laughter back into the house. Two are much better than one and Dad always said "every pet needs a pet" and soon Juni was imported from Sweden. Those two are so funny and beautiful I will forever be committed to this breed.
These are 'real dogs'. They run around out in the hay field, accompany us on trips and they attend most family events. I have started working with them on tracking and have been pleased at how much they enjoy using their noses and discerning human scent from everything else.

Fortunately I live on some acreage here in beautiful 'Scansin and my life is filled with AKC Chinese Cresteds, Weimaraners, German Wirehaired Pointers, two horses and three little lawnmowers named Abner, Burbank and Chet. They are registered Old English Babydoll Southdown sheep. Everybody's favorite is Zildjian the Blue and Gold Macaw who keeps the dogs in line by giving them various commands. She knows many tricks and is also bilingual.

One of my other interests is helping people become successful handling their own dogs in the field. The Master Hunter title is the pinnacle of the sport, however as a judge I am disappointed on many occasions to watch a handler with a truly talented dog blow a qualifying leg that day due to poor handling or worse yet, no knowledge of the rules. For this reason I have developed a Hunt Test Handling Clinic called "Don't Train The Dog!" © I have delivered this program to several clubs, including at a National Event and received an enthusiastic response.

Even after all these years putting show championships and MH titles on too many dogs to name across many different breeds, this addiction still prevails. When cancer got in my way, I still managed to continue to do what I love to do I just do it a little bit differently than I did before. All during cancer treatment I would wake up and realize I had dreamed about being at a dog show again.
I hope you enjoy this site and find it informative. Thank you to Web Genius/dear friend Wendy Van Goolen for creation and layout!!

If only we as humans could love one another
unselfishly without judgment as our dogs do...
