Our Philosophy
One of the most important considerations when breeding dogs is to be able to truly evaluate your stock for traits that they can positively or negatively throw to their progeny.
Temperament, health, structure, ability and attitude are just some of the factors we take into account during this process. It is not a process that occurs in one day, but over many months and years of watching a particular animal grow up, develop and excel at whatever abilities the breed was designed to do. To produce puppies with the best and most desirable attributes of their breed can only be done by pairing animals of this magnitude. I have no desire to "see what I will get" but rather based on observations, research, knowledge and experience with some science and technology thrown in, prefer to breed sparingly in order to be able to assess the results of this work.
There are no hard fast rules in nature and genetics is certainly not an exact science, however I feel that by using this approach the odds are much higher that we can consistently produce litters of a high caliber.
Puppies are well socialized and raised in the house exposed to all sorts of goings on of normal, everyday family life. No matter the breed, there is an emphasis on understanding the critical periods of a puppy's life, introducing them to everything they may be exposed to in their lives in order to provide them with the best foundation possible so that when they integrate into their forever home, they are well adjusted and ready for other challenges and further training. We make sure all puppies meet other dogs (not by going to dog shows where they can pick up some disease), other humans, other species of animals, loud noises including gunfire (yes, even Cresteds), outdoor experiences and if it is summer they learn to swim early on. Grooming practices start on day 3 with their first toenail trim and they learn that human hands are for good things, petting, grooming, feeding, playing, but we also set boundaries and teach them some little puppy manners along with a few commands. Puppies housebreak easily as we are very consistent with this and it is interesting to see how quickly they learn to 'go potty' on command in the area designated. Pups learn about crate training and riding in vehicles, they learn about having a collar and/or leash around their necks and they learn to respect other dogs in the household. Weims & GWPS in particular get lots of time on birds. While we breed Weims & GWPs for lots of drive and natural instinct, the best way to make a great hunting partner, is LOTS of birds!
Providing puppies with this type of foundation takes a lot of time and a lot of work. Sometimes we have to get pretty creative to get this type of socialization accomplished, but we do it because it is critically important.
